How to Install Kali Linux on VirtualBox

Install Kali Linux on VirtualBox

Installing Kali Linux on VirtualBox is a relatively straightforward process. VirtualBox is a virtualization software that allows you to run guest operating systems, like Kali Linux, on your host computer. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to install Kali Linux on VirtualBox:

Note: Before you start, make sure you have VirtualBox installed on your computer. If not, you can download it from the official VirtualBox website (https://www.virtualbox.org/).

1. Download Kali Linux ISO:

Go to the Kali Linux official website (https://www.kali.org/downloads/) and download the Kali Linux ISO file. Make sure to choose the appropriate version, such as 64-bit or 32-bit, depending on your host machine's architecture.

2. Install VirtualBox Extension Pack (Optional):

It's recommended to install the VirtualBox Extension Pack to enable additional features and better integration between your host and guest operating systems. You can download the extension pack from the VirtualBox website and install it.

3. Open VirtualBox:

Launch VirtualBox on your host machine.

4. Create a New Virtual Machine:

   - Click on "New" to create a new virtual machine.

   - Enter a name for your virtual machine (e.g., "Kali Linux").

   - Choose "Linux" as the type and "Debian (64-bit)" as the version (Kali Linux is based on Debian).

   - Assign memory (RAM) to your virtual machine. At least 2GB is recommended, but more is better if your host system has enough resources.

   - Create a virtual hard disk now and click "Create."

5. Configure Virtual Hard Disk:

   - Choose "VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image)" as the hard disk file type.

   - Choose either dynamically allocated or fixed size for your virtual hard disk. The dynamically allocated option is more flexible and only consumes space as needed.

   - Specify the size of the virtual hard disk. A minimum of 20GB is recommended for a basic installation, but more space is better if you plan to install additional software.

6. Configure Virtual Machine Settings:

   - Select your newly created virtual machine in the VirtualBox Manager.

   - Click on "Settings."

   - Under the "Storage" section, click on the empty CD/DVD drive and select the Kali Linux ISO file you downloaded earlier.

7. Start the Virtual Machine:

   - Select your virtual machine in VirtualBox.

   - Click on the "Start" button to launch the virtual machine.

   - Follow the Kali Linux installation process, which will include configuring language, location, and setting a root password.

8. Complete the Kali Linux Installation:

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation of Kali Linux. You can choose the default settings for most options.

Log In Kali Linux: User: kali and Password: kali

9. Install Guest Additions (Optional):

After the Kali Linux installation is complete and you've logged in, you can install VirtualBox Guest Additions for better integration and performance. To do this, go to the "Devices" menu in the VirtualBox window of your Kali Linux virtual machine and choose "Insert Guest Additions CD Image." Then, follow the on-screen instructions to install the Guest Additions.

10. Reboot the Virtual Machine:

After installing Guest Additions or making any other configuration changes, it's a good idea to reboot your virtual machine.

Now, you should have Kali Linux up and running in VirtualBox on your host system. You can start exploring and using Kali Linux for various security and penetration testing tasks.
